Check out my new ride. After driving through a gigantic puddle in Holland about 3 weeks ago in the Stratus, I decided that I needed a new car. Driving around in the summer with no air, windows, locks or radio got to me fast, I could not take it anymore. Electrical problems are hard to fix and it just was not worth it. Don't get me wrong the Stratus was a trooper and got me where I needed to go, but this car will get me there on time, without having to make emergency "what should I do?" calls to Lance and Dad. Check it out!

4 wheel drive so I don't get stuck every other day this Winter. Take that Northern Michigan!!

Goodbye Sadie

Harley and I are very sad today. Some of you may know that Sadie has been feeling kind of sick lately, she was scheduled to go to the vet today. Unfortunately her poor little gecko body was too weak to go on. Sadie died today just before leaving for the vet. I never knew how attached I have become to my geckos until today. I feel sad; Harley's cute little girlfriend is gone. Lance and I made her a little gecko casket today and held her funeral at the end of the pier. She was such a good gecko, may she rest in peace as she watches over the beautiful bay. I love you Sadie!!

To help Harley make the adjustment to life without Sadie, Lance and I renovated his cage completely. He has a hammock, stone hut, log hut, desert backdrop, bathing pool, and heat lamp. He is going to love his new place and I hope he does not get too lonely!

Today I spent a large part of the day at Lances dad's shop. I learned to change my own oil (completely by myself, I know you are all very proud), and I also got to test out the driver's seat in the new 900 horse off road race truck. It is coming together well and I can't wait to see him running circles around everyone on tv this summer. His dad is sponsored by Monster Energy drink (he will be in the truck with the blue "low carb" decals). Anyway it was a great day up north and I am excited that summer is finally starting to show its face around here. Enjoy the pics.....

Smokes got some new clothes in the mail today. They are handmade with love, by Aunt Jayme. Smokes is way excited for his new spring collar and can't wait to show it off to every0ne that walks by the window to the mailbox. Thanks Jayme for making Smokes so stylish. Inversion Table

I bought an inversion table yesterday. It feels SOOO good on my back. Lance likes it too. It takes up a bit of space in my small apartment, but I am so excited to have one. I have been wanting one for a long time. Check it out.....

It snowed here last night, can't believe it........I am cold! I guess I should have expected it living in Northern Michigan. So, if anyone has a burning desire to make a snow angel, snowman or snowball, head on over to my place and we will have a real good time!

This past weekend I went to visit Erin in NYC. We had so much fun just hanging out. She took me all over the city to see the touristy sites and also showed me a few of Brooklyn's hot spots. I took my first subway ride, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, took a cab ride all by myself ;) and even ate at a restaurant featured the night before on the food channel. I had a great time and I can't wait to go back!! Thanks for the awesome hospitality Erin!

One of my lady friends at work lives on a farm and she invited me over this weekend for a visit. I had a lot of fun and it did me good to hangout with the animals. We took her 5 dogs for a walk, a golden, a lab, a GIANT sheep dog, and two average sized mutts. They rolled in the snow, chased deer and ran through the mud. We also played with her 4 cats (Smokes would have loved it!) I didn't know there was such a pretty countryside in Petoskey.

Check out Lewis the parrot. He is so smart and loves to talk. Very neat!

Bonnie has 8 horses. I got to give them treats and such, I am going back this spring to ride them hopefully.
Saturday Lance has a basketball tournament. His team did good and I had a lot of fun sitting in the stands with the other girlfriends.

We got like 15 inches of snow here the other night. I have never seen so much snow at once. I had to work extra hours at the hospital because they had a hard time getting nurses to come in. CRAZY!! I hope this is the last snow of the year, I am ready for spring. I got my car stuck a number of times, but the plow guys were real nice and helped get me out. Hope everyone is having fun in Florida!

Look at how tall my cat grass is getting. Dirty has her eyes on it and after I get off work tonight the kitties are going to feast on this stuff. Smokes has never tried it, but I am sure he will love it. I think it looks pretty, it adds some life to my house. Lets hope they don't make a mess on the freshly cleaned carpet ;)

Smokes is still enjoying the fans and pulled back carpet. I don't think he wants the carpet to dry.

Flood

Woke up to a flood this morning. I called the office here to request the first available maintenance man and by the time he got to my apartment the toes of his boots were covered with ice cold water. What a mess. I have had dudes walking in and out of my apartment all morning. They sucked up all the water and left me with 5 giant, loud fans and a lovely dehumidifier that seems to be shooting out cold air (not sure if this is normal?!) Anyway, they said to leave them plugged in for a couple of days and we will see then if I need new drywall and baseboard. They said they would be back in the morning to check on me (probably to make sure the giant blue thing doesnt suck me up during the night.) I really don't want to move, because this is my home and I can't just leave (ha). So anyway, all said and done, my rugs will dry as will the rest of my stuff that got wet. Nothing valuable was lost and it is absolutely hilarious to watch Smokes' fat pouch blow in the wind from the fans (video to come if I can get a good one.)

Dirty moved in today. She is feeling right at home and has already claimed her spot on the bed for tonight. She is one smart kitty, Smokes is too busy sniffing his gal's bottom and checking out her bed to even notice that his usual night time spot has been taken over. Don't worry mom and dad, Dirty is going to love her vacation just as much as you do! Have a great time!!

Lance has been attacked by the cold/flu bug that is going around. He has been pretty sick and I feel bad for him. He has not felt good for almost 2 weeks. If he is not at school, he has been sleeping. I think Smokes kind of likes it ;) I am hoping to stay healthy for the rest of this winter season. It is snowing like crazy here...we have almost 10 inches of new snow. Come skiing and snowboarding everyone!!

Lance made a recent discovery at Walmart in the seafood section. Walmart sells muscles in their shells. Of course, we had to try them. They were good and it reminded me of the Smokin' Oyster Bar in Florida. We cooked them up, got out the Saltines and hot sauce and enjoyed our muscles. So yummy!

Things have been quite busy for me lately and I only see them getting busier in the near future. Here is a quick post before I am off to work for the next six nights in a row....ouch! Wedding plans are moving right along. I have picked out and ordered my dress, picked out the bridesmaid's dresses, booked the reception place, talked with the florist, and photographer and decided on favors. I hope the rest of the planning goes this easy. Mom is awesome and has basically done all the calling and arranging since I am way up here. Thanks mom! Anyway, I am off to work....if you don't hear from me in a week now you know why.

Guitar Hero....good for more than just a laugh!

This past week while Lance was playing Guitar Hero he got a little excited and the Ikea coffee table cracked under the pressure. Did you know they are made out of CARDBOARD in the inside, not solid wood as they appear? Anyway, it was far worth the laugh and the Ikea table has reached its final resting place in the dumpster outside my building. The good news.........

He bought me a new table at the Goodwill, sanded, stained and shined it to make it far better than anything Ikea had to offer. This table will even allow him to perform the entire Guitar Hero concert on it as if he were on stage. Now I just have to find a way to break the two end tables so I can get new ones to match my table. Thanks Lance!

Lance and I went to see a 3D movie today in Traverse City. We saw My Bloody Valentine. The name explains it all, it was sick, gorey and everything we expected. We had a lot of fun being scared and it was fun to have things jump at us from off the screen. 3D movies are the future and they are a lot of fun. We even got to wear these sweet glasses. The way home was quite the journey, we are getting pounded with snow! I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

I got this picture in the mail the other day from my mom's friend and I wanted to share it with everyone. I love it! In the pic we are celebrating my engagement. Finally things are looking up. Work is going well all, I am learning more and more everyday. It is stressful, but I am so thankful to be back to work. I can't wait to get adjusted a little more so I can start planning the wedding. Betsy and Patrick came to visit me this weekend. We had a good time relaxing and we even went dancing last night which was tons of fun. I just had to try out my "new" back and it did great! I still love my new place and things are still going well. I hope work continues to get easier as I learn more and get adjusted to the new schedule. Lance has one more week until he starts his final semester of school! I think he is going to refinish a coffee table for my living room. I am looking so forward to being comfortable at work so I can start planning the wedding! I hope everyone had a great weekend!

For those of you who were wondering....I made it! I am still standing after my first 12 hour shift post surgery. I have a lot to learn and it is going to be tough for a while, but once I get adjusted I think I will be alright. My back is weak and I was sore when I came home, but I rested and now it seems to be a little better. Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. I have such a strong support system! I will continue to update. I work two in a row later this week, so that is going to be tough but I CAN DO IT!!!

Tonight I start work! This should be interesting. I hope I make it!!! I am excited to finally be getting back into the real world, and I am anxious to get on with my life. Please pray that my back holds me up for the entire shift. I have been stretching like an athlete the past hour so hopefully that will help. I hope this goes a little better than it did last June. I will keep you posted. Until then, think of me while you are snuggled tight in your beds tonight.

Welcome 2009! So long 2008 I am glad to see you go. I will never forget the roller coaster of a year 2008 was. I graduated nursing school on top of the world, got knocked down hard by a much needed back surgery and ended on a happy note getting engaged to the most kind-hearted, man of my dreams. I will not miss you 2008 for 2009 is a new beginning for me. I start work in two days and I am very excited to get back to normal. This year will be a good one, I can feel it. This year will be an exciting one, the highlight will come this fall when Lance and I tie the knot. Here are some pics of my new place. It is great, I love it!

A Christmas Surprise

Lance came into town on the 26th with a little more than just the Baker Family Christmas party on his mind. Towards the end of the party when everyone was chatting around a bowl of peanuts, he suggested that we exchange Christmas gifts. I shrugged it off, and suggested that we wait until everyone left. He agreed, for a minute and then asked again. In short, we exchanged gifts. He handed me a heavy square box and I opened it. Inside was a digital picture frame box with a 5lb weight inside. Feeling almost as embarressed as I thought he would be after forgetting to put the frame back into the box after uploading pictures, I turned to Lance. He looked confused, and just as quickly and I became confused, he was down on one knee asking me to be his wife. Here come the tears and of course the words he wanted to hear. I SAID YES!!! It is official Lance and I are getting hitched....tying to knot. We are so excited and look forward to a wedding, perhaps sometime this fall. Thanks so much to everyone for their love and support. The De Jonge family just keeps gettting bigger!

I got a work release today! Dr. Kremer wrote the release without any restrictions so that I can try to get back to work. I also sealed the deal on my new apartment today. Things are starting to come together and I am getting excited to finally have a normal life again. Please pray that my back can take it! The next week is going to fly by and I plan to move on Dec. 30. I am getting excited for Christmas and I can't wait to see everyone. Thanks for reading!

Yesterday I went to Petoskey to take care of some stuff. I spoke with my boss, who was great and really reassured me that they still want me ;) I also was able to find a very nice place to live. It will be great. I found a two bedroom, two bath, with washer/dryer, on the main floor. I will also have access to a pool, hot tub, and 24/7 work out room. I will be able to continue my therapy in that gym. I also went to Dr. Kremer today and spoke with the nurse about getting a work relsease. How exciting! I am glad that I will be able to start working again, but I am nervous at the same time. I hope I continue to improve as I am still having some pain. I hope and pray that the other disc with heal on its own without another surgery. I hope to get referred to a physical therapist so I can continue with that. Otherwise I am doing great and looking forward to seeing everyone at Christmas. Life is good!

Snow!

Yesterday I was confined to the house because we had so much snow. At this rate we are sure to have a VERY white Christmas. We were under a snow warning the past two days, but today it has finally stopped. It is very pretty today, the sun is out and everything is covered in snow. I am sure snowboarders are excited. I however will warm the lodge this year as I don't think the neurosurgeon would approve of racing, out of control, downhill on a snowboard. I am getting excited to see everyone at Christmas time. This week Wednesday I will venture to Petoskey to find a new place to live. I can't believe what a long journey this has been. Thanks for all the love and support! Happy Sunday!

A Clean House

Harley and Sadie got their cage freshened up last night. Dad helped me lift the cage because it is so heavy. I think the lizards are happy again! I have resorted to taking pictures of my lizards, I know what you are thinking, how bored is this girl?......surprisingly not too bored. I am still doing physical therapy and I am getting ready to move back in January. I have a lot of healing to to between now and then, but I am confident that things will work out.

A Weekend to be Thankful For

Thanksgiving has come and gone and the house seems extra quite tonight. I miss everyone already. We had a lot of fun this weekend celebrating Thanksgiving. The De Jonge family came over on Thursday and we had a huge turkey dinner. It was nice to see everyone and we had a good time getting caught up on each others lives. I can't wait for Christmas so that the entire family, including Jayme and Dan will be home. We missed them this time around, but were excited to have shared the weekend with them via my new sweet web cam ;) Here are some pics from the weekend!

Physical Therapy Update

Today I went to physical therapy for the third time. It has been going well so far. I am going every other day so that I can really see if it is going to work. I have been getting ultrasounds, and a ton of painful massages while there. They also assist me with stretching and exercises. My PT told me today that I had "crunchy" muscles a.k.a. you have a TON of knots in your muscles girlfriend!!!! Hopefully once those are worked out, I will feel somewhat better. Other than that I have been keeping busy helping Grandma B. with her Christmas cards. I am really looking forward to the holidays, as I can't wait to see everyone.

I had my consultation with the physiatrist today and it went well. I was referred to a physical therapy place in Holland. I start actually working with the physical therapist on wednesday and will continue with that for 6 weeks about 3-4 times a week. The week of Christmas I go back to Dr. Kremer and back to the physiatrist for a check up. Hopefully by then I will be making arrangements to get back to work and moving back to Petoskey. Please continue to pray for improvments. I have a long way to go before I can get back to work, and I want to really bad. Thank you in advance for the prayers!

Fun Weekend

Lance was in town this weekend for a wedding. It was SO good to see him! We had a lot of fun, went to the aquatic center for a swim, and had the wedding last night in Saugatuk. I start my rehab program tomorrow so I am getting ready for that. Here are a few pics I took this weekend.

Today I went to the neurosurgeon for my 12 week check up. I had my x-rays reviewed and so far so good. He said that my disc space looks good and is starting to fuse! He also so said that my spine has a normal curvature now, something that was not there prior to surgery. On Monday next week I start "aggressive" physical therapy with a physiatrist right in his office. I will follow that plan for approximately 6 weeks and then return for another visit with the doctor. I am still having a considerable amount of pain with movement and sleeping, so this is a concern to me. It is the doctors hope that this will improve as I get moving again. We are optamistic that I will continue to progress without having another surgery to fuse my other bad disc. This is an option if things continue to be so painful. That being said, I am encouraged and ready to start the next phase of the healing process. I was able to celebrate the fact that I am fusing with a haircut tonight.

Lance and I have a wedding this weekend so I was excited to sit in the chair and get my haircut. Here are some photos of the new look. Please continue to pray for healing and patience. I am still unsure about what will happen with my nursing job; I don't know if I will be able to work the floor like I had hoped to. Pray that I can stop worrying about that for right now and focus on getting better.

More Indy

Here are some more pictures from my trip to Indy. Yesterday we went to the zoo and had a great time. We saw a ton of animals and even got to pet some sharks! Not to mention it was great exercise for my back. Enjoy the pics!

I just got back from Indy after staying about 5 days longer than expected. I had a great time and I didn't want to come home. Emily and I had some quality sister bonding and I just couldn't get enough of the girls. I will post pictures later. Right now I am off to Holland Hospital for some x-rays of my back. I have to get a flexion x-ray so pray that I can bend. Monday I go back to the doc to see how my back is fusing. I am hoping it is all fused and that I can finally start some rehab to get me back into shape for work. I still have some pain, but I am a lot better than before. I will keep everyone update as I know more!

Trip to Indy

Just a quick update of my Indy trip for those of you who care. I am still here and am having a great time. So far I have carved pumpkins, attended preschool with PK for a costume parade and Halloween party, trick or treated, passed out candy, went on several bike rides, organized the room of a 4 year old, attended church, changed a few diapers, read a ton of books and played a lot of games. I love it! Not to mention I have been getting some great tips about important stuff like ebay and blogger hot spots. Enjoy just a few pics of the past few days.

Piper was a "Purple Princess" for Halloween. Emily and I helped out with her preschool class party in the morning. I had so much fun and at the end she and all her classmates has a costume parade.

Emily and Michael were in town this past weekend and stopped by the house. It was great to see their family and celebrate Piper's 4th birthday. Everyone had fun and can't wait for Thanksgiving!

Smokes was a trooper as he was being dragged around by Piper, hounded by Miles and "gently" pet by Nola. He was exhausted by the time they left, but can't wait for Thanksgiving to have some more fun!

Grill master Betsy got a bit distracted from time to time and ended up burning a couple of the weeners on the grill. She does cook a mean hotdog though! We had a very hoppin tailgate and met some really nice Spartan fans throughout the day.

Cutest couple of State fans I have ever seen! Thanks for all the fun mom and dad!

We had such a great time! It was perfect weather and it was a blast. I can't wait for next year to tailgate again! Lance you better come and bring your tunes next year....I missed you!!

Home from NYC

Erin came home from Brooklyn to visit for the weekend. We went to Ihop for breakfast today and spent some quality time hanging out. We wandered through the bookstore and created my "to read" list for the next couple of months. It was nice to actually see her and not have to just talk on the phone. We had lots of fun catching up with each other and I can't wait to do it all again at Christmas. If I felt better and the economy was boomin I think I would be headed to Brooklyn to visit both Erin and Katrina! Oh.... and Congrats to Erin for getting a promotion at CNN!!!!!

All Locked Up

The painters arrived at Mom and Dad's house on Monday which means Smokes and I have been displaced for a while. The doors to all rooms needed to be painted so I was left with no privacy and Smokes was left with free roaming of the house...thats not going to fly Smokes!!! So, in an effort to save Mom from having cat hair in her newly painted base boards Smokes has been locked up in the basement with all of the contents from the "old" house. He seems to be enjoying it and has set up a "nest" in the middle of Mom's Christmas wreath. Lovely Smokes....hey maybe while you are down there you should attempt to use that BIG yellow exercise ball.

Rainbow

Today while I was driving around with Mom we saw multiple rainbows. God could not have shown his presence at a more appropriate time. We had just finished talking about how scary the economy is and how we needed to put everything in God's hands. Thanks God, these rainbows were a huge reassurance!

These were probably some of the brightest rainbows I have ever see. They were right in our front yard.

A full rainbow at that.....there we a number of them in town Zeeland too that we saw.

Had to pull out the rain boots for this week. Bring on the rain, I am excited to use my boots!!!

Grandma on the Move

Today I spent the day with Grandma B. helping her get adjusted to her new home. She did GREAT considering what a BIG day we had. Her new apartment is very cozy and is going to be a great place for her. I am confident that she is going to receive great care; everyone on staff there is VERY nice and friendly. Grandma is such a trooper and despite feeling overwhelmed by all of the commotion today, I never once heard her complain. Please keep Grandma B. in your prayers as moving can be a tough thing at her age. Tomorrow will be another day of adjusting, and I am sure she will continue to do great!!!

Thought I would update my blog even though I don't have a picture...sorry. This past weekend Dad, Mom and Lance helped to move me back down state so that I can really concentrate on recovering the next 3 months. I bought a pass to the aquatic center and now I swim everyday. Swimming has been good both physically and mentally for me. I have also been spending a lot of time with grandma, helping her adjust to the idea of a new place to live. Aside from that I have been reading a lot (thanks Bouwens House for funding my trip to the book store, I really appreciate it). The past 3 months have been really hard on my body so my main goal for the next 3 months is to regain my strength and enjoy the time I have with my parents and grandparents. I don't go back to the doctor for another month, I must continue to wear my brace and take it easy. If all goes well, I am thankful and blessed to have a job waiting for me in Petoskey!! Thanks to everyone for the continued prayers!!!!

Lance and I went out for a birthday dinner with some friends last night. It was mighty tasty and I even got a free birthday dessert. It felt good to get out of the house. I am bummed to have to move home, but I am excited to see what January brings.

While I was away having back surgery Harley and Sadie were rekindling their love for one another. Somehow, Harley made it over the wall in the middle of the cage and reached Sadie. Now, Sadie is pregnant, but in LOVE. I have decided after keeping them apart for the past 6 years that they are now old enough to live together under the same log. I am such a push over. Arent they cute?

Today was a day of change, a day of decisions. I talked with my boss at work today and she was very nice. She said she really wants me to work there and she is willing to hold my job until January for me...wow! I hope they are not disappointed when I finally do start, I highly doubt that I am worth holding a job for 6 months...but anyway I am thankful. I also spoke with my landlord today and he too was very nice. I have decided, in an effort to save some cash, that I am moving home with dad and mom until I am able to work again. Then in January I will hopefully move back here into an apartment where everything in on one floor. If I stayed here I don't think I would be able to walk up 3 flights of stairs with groceries and laundry. Perhaps all of this will be a blessing in disguise. I still can't believe the past few months, but it just goes to show that God has different plans for me. Hey someone has to break in the new house with mom and dad right?!? I am feeling relieved to finally have a plan for the next few months and now I am going to concentrate of getting better....watch out Zeeland pool here I come! Yesterday I went to the doctor and he said that things, although slow, are healing well. The fusion has not yet started to take place, but the plastic cylinders that were placed are still keeping the space between my bones wide open (that is good news!) I was a bit disappointed to find out that I will not be going back to work as soon as I would like however. I am usually so busy, and being stuck in a hard brace in bed has not been easy on my muscles or my mind. Sooooo.....to keep my sanity the doctor compromised with me and gave me the o.k. to do some LIGHT swimming (minus flip turns of course.) Today I went to the pool and swam about 6 widths. It felt good to move my legs and think I it will become a daily stop for me. If only Zeeland would invest in a hot tub!Surprised I still fit into a Speedo, haven't had that thing on in a long time.

I even dug out the old cap and goggles for my swim. Hey at least I look like I am a swimmer right?!

Alissa was in town for the weekend and paid me a visit at home. I have not seen her in a couple of years so we had a lot of fun catching up on each others lives. She looks great and has not changed a bit....notice all of her lovely Silpada jewels..she is doing really well selling the stuff. I am so glad she came over, it was the highlight of my day. I only wish I was able to go out for coffee or something a little more entertaining than my bedroom. Oh well, it was a great time; my stomach hurts from laughing so much!!! I also got a visit from Ashley today, we went to 711 for Slurpees and just hung out. I have such great friends....I couldn't get through this without their support.

Smokes and I spent the day bumming around the house because Betsy left to go back to school last night. We miss staying up late and watching the Food Network with her. Lance came to visit me the past couple of days and I had fun. I don't know if he enjoyed laying around for 23 hours a day, but I sure did. He helped pass the time and I am so glad he was able to come. He even talked me into going to the beach to sit by the channel and watch the boats go by. I sat in my special chair and we were able to stay about an hour. He had to leave this morning, because Shane and Caitlin are getting married this weekend and he is in the wedding. I wish I could attend, and I can't wait to see pictures.

This bird sat by us at the beach. Must be a sign from God, telling me that life could be worse. At least I have both feet!! The bird did a good job adapting though, and of course he always gets the sympathy food from all of the beach-goers.

One more thing, Lance bought a truck from Dad. Now he can do some snowplowing this Winter. Bring on the snow....just kidding I still hate the snow! Looking pretty manly Lance.

Here I lay, one day closer to feeling better. I changed the look of my blog, let me know what you think. I am continuing to feel better everyday. Although not as quick as what I would like. I continue to go for walks, made it all the way to the pond with dad yesterday. Today, I rode in the car to Grandma Baker's house and back. It was nice, painful, but nice. I needed a change of scenery and Grandma's house is one place I wouldn't feel out of place with a walker or a back brace. Lance is coming to visit tomorrow so I am looking forward to the next few days with him. Other than that not a lot has changed. I still have 2 weeks before I get x-rays to show if my back is fusing properly. I will keep everyone updated.

Today I was able to sit on the deck in my "no gravity" lounge chair and enjoy the warm weather. My awesome sisters Emily and Jayme sent me an e-pad (the green booger looking thing in the picture). It is very nice and allows me to spend countless hours on my laptop without burning my thighs, or causing pain to my lovely stomach incision. It comes in handy for writing and reading in bed too, can you believe that I need a book/magazine rest because I get tired just holding the book!?! I have such great sisters, thank you both so much!!!!

Ernie, all the way in New York City sent me this "sweet" cookie arrangement. She had me suspecting a delivery all day so I have been listening for the big brown diesel guzzling monster of a truck all day. It finally rolled up today and I was sure to send dad out to meet the guy at the front door. Due to the remodel I wanted to make sure there was no confusion ;) I think Ernie
forgot that I still have two more months of laying here...lets hope that visitors help me eat all these cookies. I think I will make them my snack during the olympics tonight..last night fruit, tonight COOKIES!!!! Thank you Erin for always being such a great support to me!!!

Here is a picture of Dad and I the day after surgery. I was able to go for a walk (about 10 steps) about 5 hours after surgery already...crazy! I love looking at this picture because I have not seen myself this straight in a long time. I have to wear the white brace for the next 3 months, by December it should be the new style. I also have to sport the white nylons (TED hose for all you medical people) for about six weeks. I don't know about you, but I think they make my legs look darn sexy...ha ;) Anyway, just thought I would post something to give everyone a visual of my new fashion attire.

Update:

I came home from the hospital on Sunday afternoon. It was a big job getting from the 5th floor in the hospital all the way to my bedroom at home, but I did it. So far recovery has been about what I had anticipated. I am however a little more helpless that what I had expected. I feel that everything is always just a slight bit out of reach. I am able to logroll in bed and that is about it, so I sleep on my back for most of the day and night. When I do get out of bed I am able to take short walks around the house, with the help of a walker or a person to grab onto. I have been wearing my back brace at all times when I am out of bed and am finding that it is not too bad after all. Before surgery that was my big concern and now it is the least of my worries. Tonight I am going to try to take a shower!!!! (I hope it is successful, because I have never gone this long without one). Overall, everything is going as expected. The incision to my abdomen is healing and will hopefully leave only a small scar.

I have had a few visitors today and that has helped to make the day go by faster. The Bouwens Family gave me this fresh fruit arrangement (it is going to be my snack tonight during the olympics ;) Thank you to everyone for being so helpful and kind throughout this long recovery!! Just a quick note to update everyone. My surgery went well and the surgeon said he was happy with how everything went. I have been up and walking about 4 times a day with a walker and they say I am doing good. I am having quite a bit of pain in my stomach where they made the incision, but hopefully that will get better in just a few days. The doc said that I will probably go home tomorrow, if I start to eat solid foods by tonight. Thank you everyone for your prayers and cards, I could not get through this alone. I can't wait to see everyone once I am all recovered and walking STRAIGHT again...whoohoo!!!!!

With only 3 days left until surgery I am getting both nervous and excited to get the healing process underway. I am hoping that I am in my final days of being a question mark shape and I am so excited to get this over with. I am confident that having surgery will help and I told mom the other day "I can't even imagine a day without back pain...it could be in the near future and I am excited for that. God had great timing for my surgery, I could not get through this long week of waiting without the Olympics being on tv. How about that mens 4 x 100 relay last night?!? I was so excited I could hardly sleep. Anyway, I will try to keep everyone updated as I recover. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and cards. I could not get through this without my family and friends.

Today Smokes decided to "go green." I am not sure if he knows what the means completely, but I think he was trying to impress Aunt Betsy by utilizing her organic, reusable , MSU Spartans bag.

It is tough to be a cat in today's world. It is hot under all those covers!

I am not sure what is going on here. All I know is that when I arrived , the water in the toilet was moving. Maybe he was "taking care of business," wouldn't that be great!

Too much fun at the beach?!? He thinks the beach is the sandy litterbox, with a fan blowing through his hair. I just can't break it to him that there really is life outside of this apartment!

Lance drove me down to the water today and we went for a little walk along the waterfront. It was such a nice day outside. We watched a softball game at the field that over looks the water and we were able to find a flat rock to sit on and hang our feet in the water. I was happy to get out and pass some time. Update: I have been enjoying my time back at my apartment this past week. I am slowing getting back to "normal" as far as my back goes, and have been able to get around a little better the past few days. Today I went to the State Park with Betsy and got some sun...i have to make it real clear where my tan lines are so the surgeon knows exactly where to "hide" the incision. I plan to stay here at least for a few more days and then it will be back to Holland to finish out this wait for surgery. I hope that the docs are enjoying their vacations with their families and that they return feeling rested and ready to fix me up. Two weeks from today! Thanks for everyones cards, thoughts and prayers. I am so blessed!!

Yesterday Lance and I took the Cavy to her final resting spot. The steel scrapyard in Gaylord. I was very impressed that she made it 30 miles without breaking down. Anyway, now that Betsy has the Focus, the Cavy can finally relax before being made into something else at the steelyard.

Smokes is here for a quick visit. He came with Betsy and he is leaving tomorrow. So far he has been enjoying his little vacation; getting plenty of lovin' from everyone. He was reunited with his girlfriend Dirty from this winter. I can't tell who is enjoying the lovin' more Dad or Smokes?!?As you can see, Smokes is absolutely huge.

We have a date for surgery.....AUGUST 14th. After a rough morning trying to come to terms with the fact that surgery is still 3.5 weeks away I am now ready to accept it and get ready. This was the earliest date due to the fact that I need two surgeons and a chunk of time in a very busy operating room. Doctors need vacations too...right?!? Anyway, I am glad that I at least have a date. Everyone continues to be so supportive and I am blessed to have such awesome friends and family. Look at the bright side at least I have a new found love for word searches, The Food Network and the awesome bed in mom and dad's spare bedroom. I will continue to post as I know more.

I had an appointment with the neurosurgeon today and....after much thought and prayer I have decided to have surgery. The doctor seems to be a smart guy..ha he better be....and he recommends I have a spinal fusion. We did not schedule a date yet, but we are shooting for sometime next week. Meanwhile I have a few pre-surgery items I need to take care of. Today I was fitted for a special, not so stylish, hard back brace that I will have to wear for 8 - 12 weeks after surgery...yippie...NOT! I also have to go get xrays tomorrow and at some point I need to have some blood work done. I am nervous, but excited to get this over with and start recovering. I am praying that this is what needs to be done and that I will be back to new by Christmas. I spoke with my work today and hopefully after recovering I will still have a position available for me at the hospital. Anyway just a quick update I am sure I will speak to everyone at some point over the phone. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

My discogram went well yesterday. It was painful as expected, but I think they were able to obtain the information they needed. I have a feeling that two discs are "bad" though, so I am not sure if they are going to be able to fix it with surgery or not. Monday I have an appointment with the neurosurgeon again and we will review the discogram and hopefully come up with a game plan. I am praying that someone will be able to do something for me. Other than that I am doing alright, I have been pretty tired and sore today so I have just been laying low. I had a few visitors tonight so that was fun. Thanks for the continued encouragement and prayers.

Good news! My discogram got moved up to tuesday instead of thursday. I will still meet with the dr. on monday and then tuesday at 10:45 is my test...although painful, moving it up is a real answer to prayer! I am anxious to get the show on the road if you know what I mean. It will be easier to lay here if I know there is a plan to recovery. I hope everyone is having a great weekend...I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for the continued thoughts, prayers and messages. They never fail to brighten my day!!!!

just a quick update about my back......
i am scheduled to meet with a dr about my discogram on monday at noon. Then on Thursday I have that horrible test done. pray for that one because it really is the most painful thing i have ever had to go through and i even promised myself after the last one that I would never do that again....oh well "sorry to myself because I lied." After the discogram it will be back to the neurosurgeon to schedule a date for surgery. Hopefully this will all happen in a timely fashion as my patience is beginning to thin. I will keep everyone updated as much as I can, sorry I don't have any sweet pictures to post this time. I can tell you that the ceiling in the Harley barn is very nice and textured....i never knew that before all of this. Anyway, thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. My family is the best!

I have been tagged by Emily over at DesignHer Momma to share a few of the quirky things about myself. Here it goes.....

1. I can't stand having change in my purse/wallet. As soon a I get it, I do one of three things with it. I a) place it in the cup holder of my car as a "parking meter stash." b) place it into the nearest gumball machine, especially if I am with Lance or c) put it in my change jar as soon as I get home.

2. I have a really hard time with people who are too lazy to return their carts to the proper place when they are finished wheeling them out to their cars at Meijer and stores like that. I find that those people are usually the first people to complain and cause a scene when their car ends up with a big dent in it. People it is a lot easier to walk a few extra steps...yes even in the rain...to return the cart to the "cart catchers" located in parking lots.

3. I have to have Q-tips with me at all times..just in case of emergencies I guess. I believe that their is nothing worse than having wet ears and no Q-tips to dry them out.

4. I will not drink a glass of water from the sink unless it has ice cubes in it. I do however keep a bottle of water in the fridge and I will drink that when poured into a glass without ice...weird.

5. I read both the Holland Sentinel and the Petoskey News Review online everyday without fail. Gotta stay tuned to what is going on around me.

6. I can't make it through a day without at least one Diet Coke. I just got Lucky Magazine with my Coke Rewards.

Rhubarb pie:

1 stalk of rhubarb
1 1/3 cups sugar
6 tablespoons flour
1 tbsp butter
2 pie crusts

Place on the bottom oven shelf. Bake 15 minutes at 450 degrees then 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Steve's GIANT rhubarb makes really good pie....yum!

Today while I was in Indian River I stopped by Steve and Sue's house. It was really nice to finally get the chance to see them. I just love it up here and I hope to see them more once I get into the swing of things at the hospital. Anyway, their yard was looking pretty healthy and green. Check out the size of this rhubarb!!!! Looks like something out of Jurassic Park.The stalks on these things were like baseball bats. I am sure Emily would appreciate making a pie out of them.

Today is the day to brag and boast about how great your dad is compared to all of the other dads out there. Dad I just want you to know that I think you are the best!!! You have been such a huge support for me and I love you so much! I hope you have a great day, knowing that you have 4 daughters that think you are the greatest!!! So here it goes, time to brag about my dad.......Yeah well my dad lived in Hawaii and learned how to surf...how many dads do that anyway...umm only the coolest ones.

Yeah well my dad has a 20 foot (i really don't know how long Tonto is but I know he is long) pleasure boat. My dad also catches giant fish in Lake Michigan.

Maybe I will get a haircut or something!

I found out that I PASSED my state boards today. You have no idea how relieved I am. Now I am a real nurse...wow how weird! Today was my first day at my new job. I made it through (8 hours of computer instruction) with an extremely sore back. Besides my back crapping out on me at possibly the worst time ever (besides the time it decided to go out while I was diving in the water at the biggest college swim meet I would ever swim in), I think I am going to like working at the hospital here. I was very impressed with what they had to say at orientation (way better than my last job...no offense to homeless bums in pontiac). But yeah I have more classroom instruction tomorrow and will be done with that on Friday. Then it is back to Holland this weekend so I can take the NCLEX on Monday. Ugh.... when the next week is over I think I am going to buy myself a treat or something..provided I pass the test. Anyway, thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers!! Betsy bought me flowers for my first day of work....she also cooked me beef stroganhof for dinner...simply the best!!!!!!

For those of you who do not know....I hurt my back again and have been laying horizontally on the couch for the past two days. I am supposed to start my new job tomorrow so I am praying that one more nights rest will allow me to at least fake like I am not in pain. This week I have orientation which requires five 8 hour days of classroom work (learning the computer system and such) so pray that I am able to fight my way through it. I just got out of the shower and look like a question mark so I am off to lay flat for a while. Thanks everybody....I miss you guys!!!

5 Random Factoids About Myself

I was tagged by Jayme over at Bouwens House this morning to share 5 random things about me so here it goes....

5. Yesterday I cried watching Oprah as she talked about euthanizing animals at the Humane Society if they don't get adopted. The shelter that she featured kills about 16 dogs a day, simply because they can not find homes for them. The dogs were so cute and wagged their tails right up to the end (o.k. now I am going to cry again). But anyway this week I plan to visit the Humane Society in Harbor Springs and check out their pussycats. I plan to just visit and give some lovin to those poor caged up animals, but if an old grandpa cat is going to be put down just because they can't find a home I am not ruling it out that he may just find his way into my home.

4. I once told a confused elderly man that my name was that of a mean co worker just so that I didn't have to hear him calling out my name all day. I know I should probably got to H*** for that, but we all make mistakes (even though I still don't think of it necessarily as a mistake) and I think God has forgiven me. I will say that the man got very good care that day (from me) even though he thought I was somebody else. There I finally confessed that one. I feel better with that off my chest!

3. I love thunderstorms and I wish it would thunder during the Winter in Michigan.

2. I got excited when the National Spelling Bee came on tv today and yes, I am watching it right now.

1. One of my favorite things to do is go mushrooming. I think it is way more fun than going to the thrift store and you all know how much I love doing that.

Betsy and I (she moved up here you know) ate lunch at the Pier today. We ate Morel Bisque on the deck and Lance was our server. It was delicious and at a very discounted price ;) While we were there Betsy may have landed a second job and who knows maybe Lance can train her if they need more help. I can tell this summer is going to be lot of fun and I can't wait to hit the beach. Dad if you come visit maybe we can enjoy a bowl of Morel Bisque together on the deck at the Pier.

Last night I got a juicer as a housewarming gift from Lance. Off to the store for fruits and veggies we went. I thought it would take like a million pieces of fruit to make one glass, but my favorite turned out to be a half of an apple and 4 strawberries...yummy. Now I will have no excuses not to eat my fruits and veggies for the day. Doesn't it look like fun?!? Everyone can come visit just to try the juicer.

Celery, onion, carrot, tomato juice....a few more slight changes..a little mixin and you have fresh squeezed V8.

The house continues to get smaller as Dad continues to demolish room after room. He has now moved on to the living room. As you can see all of those heavy bricks that once made up our fire place are now gone courtesy of a jack hammer and dad's muscles. I have been helping dad the past two days and I have not been this sore since a college swim practice. We have resorted to wearing masks so I guess that is a good thing. Anyway, after another long day on the homefront I am happy to say it is a mess!!!!Dad standing by the fire place. Those bricks were SOOOOO heavy!

Can't wait to see Santa come down our new chimney. I think he will like the renovations.

We had to empty this thing a ton of times. The plaster from the ceiling was also quite heavy and dusty. I can't imagine carrying all of that to a dumpster.

Here is a picture of Betsy's room, the laundry room, Mom and Dad's bedroom and the living room all combine. They are all one room right now. Pretty spacious I would say!

A Dog Walk

Today was Vinny's special day. We did a charitable walk for animals today that started at the Duke football stadium. I had so much fun and it made me want a dog soooo bad. I think Vinny had a great time too. We walked out of there with several samples of dog food, tennis balls and other pet products. Overall its was a great time and I am glad we participated.Vinny and I on the way to the walk. Vinny was so excited he could hardly sit still!

Here we are before the walk. Our team represented the Piney Woods Dog Park of Durham. We even raised enough money for special gold team shirts. Notice Vinny's matching bandana.

Vinny and the rest of the dogs enjoyed taking in all the free smells....if you know what I mean. Look how big that dog is...wow!

The "Poop Mobile" drove around and waited for dog owners to toss their poop bags in. I think St. Joe needs to invest in one of those. I think the driver of this thing should be featured on the show "Dirty Jobs."

After the walk Vincent was extremely hot and tired, so he decided to do some relaxing in the community dog watering hole.

This weekend I am in North Carolina visiting Jayme and Dan. Today Jayme and I went shopping , with much success. I am having a great time so far and I have decided that I am a huge fan of warm weather. Good thing I just moved to Northern Michigan..right?!?Grandpa and Grandma drove me to the airport. We had a great time and laughed a lot as we had to keep circling the airport because we could not figure out exactly where the drop off zone was due to massive airport construction. But I made it safe and on time....thanks guys!!!!

Tonight we ate real southern bbq at a "hole in the wall" restaurant. I had bbq pork, macaroni, fried okra and hushpuppies. It was sooooo good and I must go back sometime. It was the kind of food I can see myself craving on a lonely night in Petoskey. Very tasty!!!!

Here I am being according to Jayme a "corny tourist" whatever!!!!!

We were invited to sign the walls at the restaurant. So we took full advantage and left our mark!!!

Demolition Day 3

Today at 7:30 am I woke up to some really strange loud noises and then my bed began to shake. Turns out there were two strange men in the attic above me sucking out insolation with a giant vacuum. Dad was also contributing to the noise by banging out the drywall ceiling with a sledge hammer. Welcome home Jenna....welcome home! The noise didn't seem to bother Betsy though, she amazingly was able to drown out the sound until a comfortable 10:30 am. Anyway, the house is looking more and more a mess each day which is a good thing! Tomorrow is our garage sale hopefully the quarters and dimes of junk add up to a new piece of furniture for Mom's new house.Dad and Mom working together to make my old bedroom their pad for the summer. A ceiling fan?! I don't think I ever had that. Also you will be happy to know that we now have a lock on the back bathroom door....things are improving here all the time.

All the drywall is gone, right down to the studs now!

Dad and Mom's room just got a whole lot bigger. I think I even heard Mom question if they would have too much room...ha!

Betsy and I pulled rusty nails from the walls for a while tonight, good thing I got a tetnus shot this week. After a long day, I speak for everyone when I say I can't wait for tomorrow's garage sale....oh and I fly to Jayme tomorrow afternoon so I will let Dad progress a little more on the house before I update again.

Demolition Day 2

Dad continued with his demolition today while Mom, Betsy and I prepared for a garage sale that will take place on Thursday and Friday of this week. We priced out a lot of stuff, so everyone should come check us out at Aunt Barb's house. Most everything is super on sale for 25 cents!This is a picture of Dad and Mom's bathroom. Makes me want to take a tub...NOT. As you can see their old bedroom is now connected to Betsy's old room.

Ummmm... where is the toilet, I need to take a poop! Oh wait, it is now in the back bathroom, replacing the toilet that sounded like a monster...good work Dad!!!

Who would have thought Mom and Dad had hard wood floors all along. Dad got pretty far today, the boarded up hole in the wall is where their new hot tub will eventually be. Mom is sooooooooo happy to have this all happening for real. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I can't believe this is FINALLY happening. Dad and Mom have decided to start remodeling our house. The plans are drawn up, they look awesome and it is actually happening. I hope the project goes according to plan and that everything turns out great. Just think at Christmas Mom will be putting up her tree in a new living room and Piper and Nola will be sitting by a new and improved fireplace leaving cookies for Santa. I can't wait to see the finished project, until then....Mom hang in there and Dad please wear your dust mask!!!!Here is a picture of Dad making the first cut into the brick outside their bedroom. He is standing where the hot tub will be this winter.....SWEET!!!!
